Controlling Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs when your blood glucose levels are high during pregnancy.
In most cases gestational diabetes will go away after giving birth but it is important to control gestational diabetes during your pregnancy to avoid increasing the risks of having your baby develop diabetes later or and your own risk of developing diabetes after giving birth as well.
If you do not control gestational diabetes your baby can product more insulin causing it to gain more weight or cause a premature birth this is why it is important that you follow a gestational diabetes diet and other tips to help control gestational diabetes.
Here are a couple of tips you should follow to control your gestational diabetes.
- Don't skip any meals; eat 6 meals throughout the day.
- Eat the least amount of carbohydrates you can during breakfast because your bodies insulin resistance is greater in during the morning.
- Try to eat the same amount of carbohydrates at each meal.
- If you feel dizzy or nauseous in the morning eat 2 serving of crackers as soon as you step out of bed.
- Eat small meals during the day but avoid any foods with saturated fats.
- Eat foods that are high in fiber such as rice, pasta, whole grain bread, oats, fruits and vegetables.
- Eat foods that contain low sugar.
- Drink at least 6 glasses of water during the day.
- Eat at least 4 servings of dairy products each day.
- Eat at least 3 servings of foods rich in iron.
- Eat at least 1 serving of food that contains vitamin C and A every day.
- Eat something that contains folic acid every day.
- As with any pregnancy avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking.
- Don't drink any caffeinated beverages including coffee and energy drinks.
These tips will help you successfully control gestational diabetes and ensure a healthy pregnancy and birth as well.
